Out of sight, out of mind?

Evaluation Centre's overview of the outsourcing market, including business process outsourcing (BPO) solutions and IT outsourcing services

...Outsourcing – both for IT operations and business processes – is now firmly established as an option that all organisations need to consider as part of their overall IT and business strategy.

It can take many forms, from ‘traditional’ outsourcing where a third party takes over and runs all operations; to managed services, where support and management of the IT infrastructure is provided over a network; and Software as a Service (SaaS), where the outsourcer owns and manages one or more applications.

Given the range of choices, it’s not surprising that the majority of companies have taken this path for one or more of their IT or business functions. But according to this year’s survey, the most popular areas for IT outsourcing are website and e-business (62%), software development (52%), application support and maintenance (52%) and wide area network support and operations (50%).

Meanwhile, the areas recording the fastest growth in outsourcing are data centre operations (19%), desktop systems (14%), LAN support and operations (12%) and IT helpdesk (12%). Outsourcing doesn’t have to be ‘let’s give everything to one provider’. The trend now is to award contracts to multiple suppliers who may specialise in a particular service area – favoured by 67% of our respondents – rather that handing over all the operations to a single supplier (chosen by 26%).
